Basic Directions for Creating a Wig for your doll.
This is a very simple way to create a wig for your doll using Tibetan lamb on the skin or Mohair.
Basically you drape a piece of paper across the head from ear to ear to mark
the width of the wig. You can use scrap paper, typing paper, computer paper or whatever you have at hand.
Mark the length of the wig at the neckline.
Cut the
paper to these dimensions. The paper should be a sort of rectangular shape at this point.
Place the paper back onto the dolls head and
create darts by gathering the paper together on both sides of the head
(towards the back of the head at a 45 degree angle) so it will fit smoothly around the head.
Trim the excess paper and shape the paper as needed (rounding the hairline etc.).
Now you can use this paper as a guide to create a wig
pattern for your doll.
Lay the paper pattern on the skin side of the Tibetan lamb (See helpful tips).
Turn under the front edge of the skin to create a
smooth hairline around the face of your doll.
Helpful Tips:
Use very share scissors and carefully clip only through the skin using small snips
with the scissor tips only.
This will help you avoid cutting through the hair at the same time. Copyright 2006 Lisa Rynda - Rynda Original Designs
Here is another way to create a wig for your
doll.
supplies needed
are:
loose-weave fabric scrap large enough to fit over the dolls head.
Scissors
a Blow
dryer
Tweezers
or hemostat, a small
crochet hook (optional).
Rubber
bands or twist ties
Plastic
wrap
Pencil
or pen
Thick
craft tacky glue
paintbrush
Sewing
needle and thread to match hair color
Fabric
glue (such as fabri tack glue)
Tibetan
hair/Mohair on the skin
Cut off all the doll's hair. Get as
close to the scalp as possible without cutting into the doll's head.
Remove the head of the doll from
the torso/body. An easy way to do this is to heat the back of the doll's
neck for 45 to 60 seconds using a blow dryer or similar heat source. This
softens the vinyl and allows you to push down and pull up on the head, to
remove the head from the neck knob.
Remove all the hair pieces/plugs
from inside the doll head. You can use a crochet hook can help loosen the
hair. Use tweezers/hemostat to completely remove the hair.
Cover your doll head with regular
plastic wrap. Hold it in place with a rubber band, or twist tie around the
dolls neck. Place your fabric over the top of the plastic wrap and secure
in the same manner. Try to remove any lumps in the keeping it as smooth as
possible before securing it in place.
Draw the desired hair line using a
pencil. Pressing with your finger tips you should be able to feel where
the original holes are and use that as your guild when drawing the
hairline onto the fabric.
Apply tacky glue to the inside of
your hair line. You can use a paintbrush or your finger tips. Allow
the glue to dry completely. This may take several hours to overnight.
The dried fabric will be your wig cap.
When completely dry remove the wig
cap/fabric from the doll head, but leaving the plastic wrap on the doll.
Cut away the excess fabric from
outside of the drawn hair line. Now replace the wig cap on the doll's head
(over the plastic wrap) to recheck the size/fit.
Trim away any excess fabric from
the wig cap if it overlaps the desired hair line. If the back of the wig
cap seems loose, use a needle and thread to make a small stitch to lighten
it up to fit back of the head correctly.
Cut your Tibetan lams hair/mohair
on the skin into small pieces/sections.
Lay down a line of fabric glue
(like fabri tack glue) at the base of the hairline at the back of the
doll's head. Gently press the ends of the mohair into the glue. Apply glue
to one side of the head and add hair following the same steps. Repeat for
the other side of the dolls head. Continue working around the head in
concentric circles until you've covered everything but the very top of the
head.
Trim a small amount of hair from
the skin and set aside. Place a small dap of glue to the top of the head
and insert the ends of the hair straight down into the glue. Set the doll
aside and allow the glue to dry completely.
Smooth the hair with your fingers
to see if any more hair needs to be added. apply more hair in the same way
you did at the top of the dolls head as needed to fill any bare spots.
Allow the cap to dry completely again.
Glue the wig on your doll head
using the fabric glue if you want the wig to be permanently attachment.
